What each form is like
セルフロウリュ — self-service
A bucket and ladle sit next to the stove and you pour when you want to. The most common form in newer and smaller facilities. Etiquette varies: some places ask you to check with the other bathers first, and most post a sign about how often to pour.
オートロウリュ — automatic
The stove releases water on a fixed schedule, often every 30 or 60 minutes. You do nothing; you just want to be inside when it fires. Larger facilities post the timing near the entrance.
アウフグース — aufguss
A staff member pours, then fans the hot air toward each guest with a towel, usually as a timed session you queue for. The most performative of the three and the least common. Sessions are announced by time, so plan your visit around them.
